Deeply influenced by Langston Hughes, Phoebe Snow, and Gil Scott-Heron, she approaches poetry the way musicians approach music. "My poetry is meant to be heard. I always think about the rhythm and the flow of the words. That is as important to me as the message," she says.

Stewart Franke is from the cities of Saginaw and Detroit. In 2009 his hometown of Saginaw recognized him by awarding him a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Saginaw County Arts commission for "the enjoyment and insight his songs have brought to so many his his hometown, home state and beyond."
